My Story
Hello, and welcome to the official website of Mark Colbourne MBE. When you think of me, what do you see? A sportsman? A Paralympic cycling champion? An after-dinner speaker? Well, I am all those things and more.
My story began in 2009 when I was forced into an emergency landing whilst paragliding off the coast of South Wales. I plunged 35 feet to the solid ground and broke my back.
Following my accident, I began cycling through Disability Sport Wales and competed in the C1 classification for riders on upright bikes with the most severe disabilities. After struggling to cope both physically and mentally, cycling gave me hope.
I trained at the Newport Velodrome with the help of my cycling coach, Neil Smith. Not long after I first sat in the saddle, I made my first appearance in a track race in May 2010 at the Wales Grand Prix.
After this race, I was hooked. In 2011 I won my first UCI Para-Cycling World Cup medal. It was an incredible achievement; however, I was not done yet. I went on to take the bronze medal in the C1 time trail during my World Cup debut in Spain.
I received a lot of support from my friends and family in South Wales and it helped drive me to success at my first World Championship where I won silver at the 2011 UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships in Denmark.
The year 2012 sticks in our minds for many reasons, for me it is the year that will forever be my proudest and unforgettable. It is the year that I won my first world title, taking the gold medal in the C1 3km individual pursuit at the Para-Cycling Track World Championships in Los Angeles. At the same Championships I won the silver medal in the C1 1km time trial.
Next came the selection process for the 2012 Summer Paralympics that was held in Great Britain. I received the call from my coach and was given the incredible news that I would be representing my country.
I trained harder and longer than I have ever trained before and on the 30th of August 2012 I won a silver medal and Great Britainís first medal of the 2012 Paralympics in the C1-3 1km time trial.
The following day, not even twenty-four hours later, on the 31st August 2012 I won a gold medal in the C1 3km individual pursuit after breaking the world record in both the qualification round and in the final.
That was it, I did it, I won gold at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. It was a dream come true and a feeling that I simply cannot put into words.
Once the dust had settled and everyone had gone home, I was invited to visit Buckingham Palace where I was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to cycling.
In the summer of 2013, I announced my retirement from para-cycling.
So, what came next? Well the stage was set; I had hit my peak within the sporting world and needed a fresh challenge. I wanted to make a difference, I wanted to help people and motivate others to change their thought process and way of thinking.
There is a huge stigma attached to peoples attitude towards change in all areas of the working environment. As a motivational speaker in Cardiff I see this regularly. In fact, when I travel to Swansea and other areas across South Wales, I often come up against this.
Change creates an unnatural fear deep down in our soul, as our brains are developed to keep us safe. The reason for this is because traditionally the perception of fear when faced with a sudden curve ball, has been with us ever since that giant asteroid hit our planet all those 65 million years ago.
The truth is that in todays fast-moving global environment the only way to succeed against your competition, is to create a lasting change with your staff and within your organisation.
My name is now my brand, Mark Colbourne MBE, Paralympic Champion and motivational speaker. I have gained extensive experience delivering key messages on change and mindset and have been noted as one of the best after-dinner speakers in South Wales.
I have worked with countless FTSE 250 companies across the UK and educated people successfully on how to overcome their fear of change. If you or your business is looking for after dinner speakers in Wales, contact me and lets discuss your aims.
Professional speakers in South Wales has a lot of competition and talent especially when your desired speaker is a former sporting professional. As a keynote speaker, I always promise to deliver an authentic and motivational speech that is unforgettable to all those in attendance.
Each speech is tailored to your conference and objectives. As professional speakers go, I supply the whole package and inspire delegates, both in their professional environment and personally which many motivational speakers in Wales do not consider when they put their material together.
When you come to booking me for your charitable, sporting or business events you can expect me to set a vision, focus on goal setting for teams and individuals, taking ownership and committing to goals, identifying and overcoming hurdles. There will also be specific talking points about the use of creativity and innovation to achieve outstanding results.
How could you put a price on making your employees or team members to be more flexible and manage change proactively. Once we have completed the after-dinner talk everyone in the room will fully understand the importance of teamwork and how to achieve it.
National and global brands have benefited from thought provoking elite mindset skills that empowers confidence, overcomes fear and consistently impacts results on their bottom line, which lets face it, is the main reason anyone hires keynote speakers in Wales.
